About Event

The national renewable energy forum (NREF) is the official conference of the renewable energy (RE) sector, has been organized annually since 2008.

The forum aims to discuss the necessary work needed for RE development in Mongolia as well as introduces current important projects to the public.

BACKGROUND

2017 will be the 8th annual National Renewable Energy Forum.  Mongolia is rich in solar and wind energy resources; however, total installed capacity of Mongolian energy system is little over 1100MW. In 2016, coal fueled thermal power plants shared 90 percent of the country’s installed capacity. During peak demand, energy is imported from Russia and any surplus energy is exported out of the country at night where there is low demand, in order to maintain grid stability. This structure of the energy system is causing difficulties maintaining an independent and reliable energy supply for Mongolia by limiting our share of renewable energy.

For this reason the 8th annual NREF will focus on discussing and identifying renewable energy contributions, energy tariffs, solutions for existing problems, creating appropriate renewable energy policies and rules (National grid code etc.) and, developing strategies for the energy system until 2030.

Mission

FORUM OBJECTIVES

The goal of the NREF is to identify appropriate policies for rapid development of renewable energy. However, forum topics are decided depending on problems or challenges of that year. The 8th NREF aims to make conclusions over the current state of RE development in Mongolia, find solutions for necessary work to be done within the near further, search for opportunities for expanding RE the energy market, connecting renewable sources to local grids and, increasing RE supply for small and medium sized applications.

PARTICIPANTS

Our 7th NREF consisted of 500 total participants of both experts and locals from the community with 20 percent of our participants were from aboard. We expect even a larger number of participants for the 8th NREF. Our forum organizers try to encourage foreign investors, with interest in investing in RE in Mongolia.

The forum participants are dived into the following four groups:

A. Moderator

Moderators have an in depth knowledge about the specific session and is an influential and recognized person of the sector.

B. Speakers

Speakers are well known local and international experts with at least 5 years of experience.

C. Panellists

At the end of each session, 30 minute long discussions will be held. 4-5 panelists will participate; representing government organizations, private companies, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and, academic research institutes.

D. Other participants

Other participants are able to attend the forum as guests. They are welcomed to give comments and ask questions in regards with the session’s topic.

PROCEDURE

The 8th NREF will be held in two hall simultaneously. The forum at the main conference hall will consist of 4 sessions where each session has four, 10-15 minutes long presentations. At the end of every session, 30 minute discussion will be held. From the discussion results, the organizer will prepare an official Forum Report and submit it to the Ministry of Energy and Energy Regulatory Authority.
